LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College women's squash won 27 of 30 sets to ease past Tufts University, 9-0, in the team's final match before finals and winter break on Saturday afternoon at the Bates Squash Center.
The 10th-ranked Bobcats (2-1) took seven of the nine matches in straight sets against the visiting 32nd-ranked Jumbos (3-5).
Bates captured three-set wins at the No. 2-8 positions as junior Myriam Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.), senior Samantha Matos (New York, N.Y.), senior captain Rakey Drammeh (New York, N.Y.), junior Lesea Bourke (Greenwich, Conn.), first-year Emma Dunn (Bellevue, Wash.), first-year Charlotte Cabot (Dover, Mass.), and junior Emma Korein (Rydal, Pa.) won in order.
At the No. 1 spot, junior Nessrine Ariffin defeated Paget Stanco in four sets, 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8. In the final and most exciting match of the day, sophomore Carolyn Attenborough (Manchester, Mass.) rallied for a five-set, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, victory over Sophie Laing at No. 9 with both teams gathering to support their respective teammates.
After winter break, Bates hosts Connecticut College and Williams on Jan. 11 in its first matches of 2014.
