Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Leah Humes gave Bates College women's soccer an early 1-0 lead, but Connecticut College scored goals in the 40th and 90th minutes to pull out a 2-1 win at Tempel Green on Saturday.
The Bobcats (2-6-1, 1-5-1 NESCAC) struck first as Humes (Beaconsfield, Quebec) took a pass from classmate Caitrin Griffin (Geneva, Ill.) and headed the ball into the lower right corner of the net at the 24:27 mark for her second goal of the season.
The Camels (3-3-2, 1-2-1) responded just over 15 minutes later as Aina Torres found the back of the net off a Morgan Cowie-Haskell service on a free kick 39:55 into the contest. From there, the two teams played scoreless soccer for almost 50 minutes until Cathy Higgins headed in a ball from the center of the box off an assist from Annie Higgins with 25 seconds remaining on the game clock.
Camel goalkeeper Bella Hall made five saves to earn the win and improve to 3-2-0 on the season while Bobcat senior keeper Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) stopped three shots.
Bates led the hosts in shots on goal (6-5), but Connecticut College held advantages in shots (13-10) and corner kicks (6-2).
For the visitors, Griffin and first-year Jessica Vocaturo (Columbus, N.J.) each notched two shots. On the opposite end, Cowie-Haskell and Annie Higgins posted three shots apiece.
Next, Bates hosts the University of New England on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. under the lights at Garcelon Field.
