Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Bates College women's soccer played within one goal of No. 22 Williams College for over 56 minutes but eventually fell 3-0 at Cole Field on Saturday.
Six different players figured in the scoring for the Ephs (9-2-2, 6-2-1 NESCAC) who scored twice in a 10 minute span in the second half to gain separation from the Bobcats (4-8-1, 1-7-1).
Kristi Kirshe tallied the game's first goal in the 15th minute off an assist from Hayley Cook. Cook sent in a service which Kirshe redirected with her head. Bates senior goalkeeper Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) got a piece of the shot but could not keep it out of the net.
The Bobcats kept the Ephs off the board for the remainder of the first half and for the first 10 minutes of the second period until Crystal Lewin netted the game's second goal in the 57th minute. Alison Magruder played a cross into the box which Schmelz punched under pressure from Lewin with the ball subsequently making its way into the net.
In the 66th minute, Hana Tomozawa provided the final tally as she headed home a cross from Audrey Thomas who attacked along the right flank.
Bates almost struck first in the contest as senior Julia Rafferty (Reading, Mass.) placed a shot on frame in the fourth minute. After Williams scored its third goal, sophomore Caitrin Griffin (Geneva, Ill.) and senior Jaimie Cappucci (Saugus, Mass.) each notched shots on goal.
Schmelz recorded nine saves in the match while Hannah Van Wetter posted three saves in the shutout. The Ephs outshot the Bobcats, 27-6.
