Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Bates College men's soccer pressured No. 21 Williams College in the second half, but a 31st minute goal from Jonathan Westling gave the Ephs a 1-0 win at Cole Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats (4-7-2, 0-7-2 NESCAC) mounted a sustained offensive attack in the middle portion of the second stanza, but the Ephs (9-4-0, 6-3-0) kept the visitors off the board and rode their first-half tally to victory.
Westling netted the game-winner, taking a pass from Patrick Gordon in the box and knocking it past Bates sophomore goalkeeper Joe Maffly-Kipp (Chapel Hill, N.C.).
Bates notched three shots in the first half but gained more opportunities in the second period. In the 55th minute a header from senior Dan Remillard (Hanover, N.H.) went wide of the mark off a free kick from junior Aaron Nickelsberg (Concord, Mass.). Just over a minute later, junior Sean Moyo (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) challenged Eph keeper Peter Morrell with a shot in the box after a service from junior Tyler Schleich (Santa Barbara, Calif.).
Sophomore Luis Pereira (Curitiba, Brazil) placed a shot on goal from inside the box in the 58th minute while headers from junior Nick Ford (Columbus, N.J.), and Remillard could not quite find the net in the 75th and 86th minutes respectively.
Williams controlled play throughout the first half, gaining advantages in shots (13-3) and corner kicks (9-1). The Ephs struck after registering eight shots (four on goal) and four corner kicks. The hosts finished the game with edges in shots (27-13), shots on goal (7-5), and corner kicks (11-2).
Morrell notched five saves for the shutout while Maffly-Kipp made four saves.
