Grees scores in men's soccer's 2-1 loss to Middlebury

Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine – Senior Tyler Grees scored in the 64th minute, but it was not enough to overcome two earlier goals from Middlebury College as Bates College men's soccer lost 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Russell St. Field.

For the Panthers (6-3-1, 5-3-1 NESCAC) junior Harper Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) opened the scoring in the 44th minute for his second goal of the season. First-year Adam Glaser (Washington, D.C.) added a second tally for the visitors off an assist from junior Noah Goss-Woliner (Waitsfield, Vt.) in the 53rd minute. The goal marked Glaser's team-leading sixth of the year.

Grees (Williamstown, Mass.) brought new life to the Bobcats (4-6-2, 0-6-2) with his third goal of the season, but the hosts could not find the equalizer. First-year Peabo Knoth (Portland, Maine) assisted on the goal giving him team-highs for assists (six) and points (14) on the year. Bates took three shots and landed one on goal after scoring.

For Bates, sophomore goalkeeper Joe Maffly-Kipp (Chapel Hill, N.C.) made a season-high 11 saves while Ethan Collins stopped five shots for Middlebury in the win.

The Panthers held advantages in shots (19-13) and shots on goal (13-6) with Glaser recoding game highs for shots (seven) and shots on goal (five). Grees paced the Bobcats with two shots on frame.

The Bobcats nearly struck first in the 31st minute as a free kick from sophomore Luis Pereira (Curitiba, Brazil) taken from just outside the box sailed wide.

In the second half, Middlebury almost gained a 3-1 lead when a shot from first-year Tom Bean (Waukee, Iowa) clanged off the crossbar in the 69th minute.

Prior to the game, Bates honored its three seniors – Grees, Ethan Kass (New York, N.Y.), and Dan Remillard (Hanover, N.H.) – in their final home contest.

Next, the Bobcats play at Williams on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. while Middlebury hosts Castleton St. on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
