BALTIMORE, Md. -- No. 13 nationally ranked Johns Hopkins University won two out of three closely-contested doubles matches and went on to defeat the No. 23 Bates men's tennis team 8-1 on Sunday.

Bates got its lone point at No. 3 doubles, where junior Jeff Beaton (Haverhill, Mass.) and first-year Ben Bogard (Lido Beach, N.Y.) edged Andy Hersh and Jeff Kamei by a 9-7 score. Jacoby Barnaby and Casey Blythe edged Bates' top doubles pair, sophomores Matt Bettles (Taunton, England) and Rob Crampton (Wilton, Conn.), by an 8-5 score. The host Blue Jays (4-1) also received an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles from Warren Elgort and Andrew Wang over Bates first-year Timmy Berg (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior Sam Woods (Cambridge, N.Y.).

Bettles played Bates' closest singles match, falling in three sets to Wang.

Bates (4-4) finishes its trip to the Mid-Atlantic with a match against Kalamazoo College to be played at Swarthmore College on Monday at 10 a.m. Kalamazoo is the ninth-ranked team in the Division III Central Region; Bates is currently ranked No. 7 in the Northeast.
