LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Sam Empson (Washington, D.C.) deposited a corner kick into the far upper corner of the goal in the 75th minute to propel No. 18 Williams College to a 1-0 win over Bates College in NESCAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Russell Street Field.
The teams squared off in a defensive battle for most of the afternoon, with Williams taking a 14-10 advantage in shots.
Williams goaltenders Andrew Lyons-Berg (Silver Spring, Md.) and Andrew Graham (Northbrook, Ill.) combined for four saves and the shutout.
Bobcats first-year goalkeeper Greg Watts (West Chester, Pa.) turned back five shots.
The Ephs improve to 2-0 (1-0 NESCAC) and the Bobcats fall to 1-1 (0-1 NESCAC).
The Bobcats next play at Amherst in a NESCAC matchup on Sept. 20.
