LEWISTON, Maine -- Dan Jozwiak scored in the fifth minute of overtime to give winless Tufts University a 1-0 NESCAC men's soccer victory over Bates College on Saturday at Russell Street Field.
The Jumbos entered the win column at 1-4-1 overall, 1-2-1 in NESCAC play. Bates fell to 1-5-1 and 0-4-1 in the conference.
Jozwiak (Boulder, Colo.) sent a hard shot past Bates senior goalie Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H.) in the game's 95th minute for his first goal of the season. First-year Naji Muakkassa (Jamesville, N.Y.) earned the assist on the play.
Tufts achieved most of the scoring opportunities in the first half, including a Jozwiak shot that hit the crossbar in the fifth minute before Bates' defense cleared the ball. Schleicher also saved a threatening direct kick by senior Kevin Anglin (Endicott, N.Y.) in the 11th minute. Tufts junior Peter DeGregorio's (Whately, Mass.) shot midway through the second half ricocheted off the right and left posts before Schleicher got his hands on it.
Bates chipped at the Tufts defense later in the game. Senior Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H.) took a pass from senior Peter Dennehy (Barrington, R.I.) in the 68th minute and ripped a shot requiring a tough save by junior David McKeon (Loudonville, N.Y.).
Tufts took 21 shots to Bates' 17. Bates committed 15 fouls to Tufts' nine, and the Bobcats drew 10 offside calls.
Schleicher had five saves for the Bobcats, as did his Tufts counterpart, McKeon. With only 68 seconds left in regulation, McKeon saved another Bates opportunity on a shot by sophomore Patrick King (Gorham, Maine).
Bates plays at the University of Southern Maine in a non-league contest on Tuesday at 4 p.m.; Tufts is at Plymouth State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
