Women's soccer suffers hard-luck loss to Bantams

Nini Spalding '08 had four saves for Bates.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Lauren Olsen's header in the first half stood up as the game-winning goal as Trinity College defeated Bates College 1-0 Sunday in a NESCAC women's soccer contest.

Olsen, a sophomore forward from Cheshire, Conn., headed in a corner kick by first-year Maiko Scifo (River Edge, N.J.) in the 39th minute of the game, giving the Bantams (4-1-2, 2-0-1) a 1-0 lead they held onto despite a 13-9 Bates advantage in shots taken, including a 9-1 difference in the second half.

It is the Bantams' first win against Bates (1-5, 0-4 NESCAC) since 1999, a span of seven games.

"We played hard and played pretty well, but we just haven't been able to score," said Bates head coach Jim Murphy. The Bobcats have been shut out four times this season.

Senior Nini Spalding (San Francisc, Calif.) had four saves in goal for Bates, as did her Trinity counterpart, Emily Weedon.

Bates will play a non-league game at Babson College on Thursday before hosting Tufts on Saturday; Trinity's next game is against Williams on Saturday.

BOX SCORE: Trinity 1, Bates 0
