Women's soccer takes host Connecticut College to overtime

Julie Brown '09 tied the game at 1-1 in the first half with her first goal this season.

NEW LONDON, Conn — Rachael Schefrin (Boulder, Colo.) headed in a loose ball in the 98th minute of play, lifting Connecticut College (2-3, 1-2) to a 2-1 overtime triumph against visiting Bates College (1-4, 0-3) in NESCAC women's soccer action played on Harkness Green Saturday.


Jessica Roeder (Durham, N.H.) assisted on the game-winner, delivering a free kick in front of the net. It was the first conference victory for Winnie Edmed, who is in her second year at the helm of the Camel women's soccer program.

The Camels took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of action. Senior Jackie Wade (Medfield, Mass.) delivered a cross from the left side into the box and Analisse Rios (La Paz, Bolivia) collected the loose ball and drilled it into the upper left hand corner of the net for her second score of the season.

But the Bobcats answered with the equalizer at 28:09 of the half. Junior midfielder Julie Brown (Lynnfield, Mass.) collected a loose ball in front of the net and scored for the visitors.

After playing a scoreless second half, the teams headed for the extra session locked in a 1-1 tie. With 2:00 minutes left in the overtime, Schefrin buried the header for the Camels, propelling the hosts to the victory.

Sophomore keeper Bailey Andrews (Pembroke, Mass.) had seven saves for the Camels, recording her second consecutive victory. Senior Nini Spalding (San Francisco, Calif.) had four stops for the Bobcats.

Bates travels back home to play host to Trinity College in another NESCAC matchup Sunday at 2 p.m.
