WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore Rob Friedlander scored the game-winning goal as Bates College scored two goals in a span of 1:28 in the second half to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory over Colby College in NESCAC men's soccer Saturday.
Bates (5-8-1, 1-7-1 NESCAC) led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by first-year Dustin DeGregorio (Boxford, Mass.) midway through the half on an assist by senior Peter Dennehy (Barrington, R.I.), temporarily moving DiGregorio into a tie for the team lead with three goals. The goal came on a head-ball after a corner kick.
Colby (6-6-2, 1-6-2) fought back with goals by Matt Shatkin at 57:35 and Jamie Waters at 73:09.
The Bobcats scored just 1:13 after Waters' goal, when senior Patrick Grater (Mystic, Conn.) took a cross from senior Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H.) and headed it into the Mules' goal for his team-best fourth goal of the year, giving him the final team lead, one ahead of DiGregorio and senior Duane Pelz (Boulder, Colo.).
Friedlander (Hopkinton, N.H.) got the final goal just 1:28 later, his first of the season, chesting the ball in after Colby goalie Doug Sibor deflected a ball by Bates first-year Tyler Dewdney (Meriden, N.H.) and the Bobcats held on from that point on for the victory.
Senior Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H.) stopped six shots on goal for Bates in his final game as a Bobcat. Also finishing their soccer careers at Bates were Dennehy, Grater, Morin, Pelz and Robert Wesley-Munro (Walpole, Mass.).
