Ray sets assists mark as No. 19 Bobcats beat Emmanuel

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's basketball team pulled away from Emmanuel College in the first half en route to a 75-57 non-league victory Tuesday night, the Bobcats' fourth win in a row, in another record-breaking night for senior Zak Ray.


The Bobcats (15-2), ranked No. 19 in this week's D3Hoops.com poll, out-rebounded the Saints (6-9) by a 45-35 margin, and grabbed 16 offensive rebounds to create a 20-6 advantage in second chance points.

Ray (Bangor, Maine) broke the Bates career assists record, previously held by Herb Taylor '84, on his way to a 13-point, eight-assist, four-steal performance. Ray now has 501.

Senior Rob Stockwell (Temple, N.H.) added a team-high 14 points and first-year Chris Wilson (Brewer, Maine) scored 11. Stockwell moved into a tie at sixth place on Bates' all-time scoring list with Ed Walker '02, with 1,409 points.

Emmanuel sophomore Mack Spellman (Clinton, N.Y.) scored a game-high 18 points, while junior Levi Smith (Tulsa, Okla.) chipped in with 16.

Sam Taylor '07 grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

The Saints had two leads in the evenly played early going, and went ahead 15-12 on a layup by junior Brian Lindsey (New Orleans, La.). Ray hit a jumper to begin a 20-3 Bates run that extended from the 11:43 mark until Stockwell's layup, assisted by Ray's record-tying helper, made it 32-18 with 2:48 to play. Stockwell scored seven points in the run and Ray had four points and four assists.


Holding a 45-34 lead early in the second half, the Bobcats outscored the Saints 16-5 over a six-minute span, culminating with a three-pointer by junior Pat Halloran (Plymouth, N.H.) that made it 69-46 with 7:45 to play. Halloran hit three from beyond the arc for nine points.

Senior Sam Taylor (Redwood City, Calif.) led Bates with eight rebounds to go with eight points. Junior Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) added eight points and seven rebounds, and first-year Jimmy O'Keefe (Lexington, Mass.) came up with seven points and five boards.

The Bobcats will play at Wesleyan University Friday night at 7:30.
