Bates women's soccer team cruises past Babson, 5-0

Kim Alexander '07 scored twice for a team-high six goals this season.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior forward Kim Alexander (Cumberland, Maine) scored twice and assisted on another goal as the Bates College women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 non-league win over visiting Babson College on Thursday.

The Bobcats (5-2) won their second straight game, while the Beavers (5-2-2) dropped their second straight game after starting the season 5-0-2.

Sophomores Julie Brown (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.) also scored for Bates, and the Bobcats benefited from an own goal headed in by a Babson player that gave them a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Sophomore Mia Lidofsky (Providence, R.I.) had two saves in the first half, and combined with junior Nini Spalding (San Francisco, Calif.), who had one save in the second half, on Bates' third shutout this season.

First-year Sam Scarpato (Weston, Mass.) made three saves in goal for Babson.

Alexander broke a scoreless tie in the 17th minute, receiving a pass from senior Mary Bucci (Norfolk, Mass.) and tapping it into the lower right corner of the Babson goal.

Jen Marino '09 breaks free en route to her second goal this season.

With five minutes left in the half, following the own goal, Marino took a pass from Alexander and broke free from the Babson defense and dribbled up a quarter of the field before shooting past Scarpato's reach from 25 yards out, for her second goal this season.

Alexander added her team-high sixth goal of the season in the 64th minute, as junior Ali Emery (Richmond, Vt.) made an excellent move to get by a defender along the left wing and pushed the ball through to Alexander, who nudged it past Scarpato.

Brown scored her third goal of the year with a powerful rising shot, assisted by senior Becky Macdonald (Danvers, Mass.).

Bates next plays at NESCAC rival Tufts University Saturday at 11 a.m. Babson hosts Smith College in a NEWMAC matchup Saturday at noon.
