Men's soccer team strikes early in 2-0 win at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bates College used goals by Greg Nelson '09 (Greenwich, Conn.) and Patrick Grater '08 (Mystic, Conn.) in the opening 6:50 for a 2-0 shutout of the University of New England in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon.


The win was the fourth straight for the Bobcats, improving their record to 4-2.  UNE dropped its fourth consecutive decision to fall to 1-6-1.

Nelson got Bates on the scoreboard at the 4:53 mark when he headed a cross from Kyle Rushton '07 (Windham, N.H.) into the back of the net for his team-leading fifth tally.

The Bobcats extended their lead less than two minutes later when Grater picked up a failed UNE clear attempt and ripped a high shot past Nor'easter goalkeeper Jon Mango '10 (Park Ridge, N.J.).

For the match Bates held an advantage in shots (14-7) and corner kicks (10-1).  Starting goalkeeper Aaron Schleicher '08 (Londonderry, N.H.) registered three saves in slightly less than 70 minutes of playing time. Rob Munro '08 (Walpole, Mass.) came on to finish the match.

Mango had eight saves for the Nor'easters, who will be looking to end their losing streak when they host Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Bates travels to Medford, Mass. that same day for a NESCAC contest with Tufts University.
