Men's soccer downs Conn College in second overtime, 1-0

Greg Nelson '09

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Greg Nelson (Greenwich, Conn.) deflected senior Ithai Schori's (New York, N.Y.) hard cross from the deep right corner into the goal in second overtime, giving the Bates College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Connecticut College in a NESCAC contest on Saturday.

The Camels (1-3-1, 0-3 NESCAC) played the final six minutes of the contest with 10 men on the field, after first-year back Matt Addison (Warwick, R.I.) drew a red card for taking down junior Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H.) when he had a clear path to the Conn College goal.

Conn College was outshot 6-2 in the first half, but carried play in the second half with a 7-3 advantage in shots.

But Bates (3-2, 2-2 NESCAC) outshot Conn College 5-0 in the overtime periods, including Nelson's game-winner past Camels sophomore goalie Ted Lane (Portland, Ore.). Morin retrieved the ball deep in the right corner and dealt back to Schori, who delivered a low rocket of a pass that Nelson converted.

Lane had four saves, while Bates junior Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H.) had two saves in earning the shutout.

Bates plays at the University of New England on Sept. 27, while Conn College hosts UMass-Dartmouth on Sept. 26.
