Women's soccer team falls 3-1 at Bowdoin

Jessie Gargiulo '07

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin women's soccer team erased a 1-0 deficit and defeated visiting Bates College by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday. The Bobcats dropped to 1-2 in NESCAC play, 3-2 overall.

Bates was able to get on the board first with a goal from senior Jessie Gargiulo (Boxborough, Mass.) 23 minutes into the first half. Junior Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) moved the ball up the center of the field and fed it to Gargiulo on the left wing, who put the ball in the net.

With a corner kick at 29:04 into the game, a scramble in front of the goal led to Kat Whitley knocking the ball across the goal line for Bowdoin (2-0-2, 1-0-1). The Polar Bears took the 2-1 lead when Ivy Blackmore put in a head shot from an Ann Zeigler cross at 33:34. Blackmore returned the favor with 14 minutes left in the game when she played the ball into Zeigler, who turned and put the ball into the corner of the goal.

Bates had some hard shots at the end of the game, but Kat Popoff of Bowdoin was able to knock them all away with some outstanding goaltending.

Kat Popoff had nine saves for Bowdoin while sophomore Mia Lidofsky (Providence, R.I.) had eight saves for Bates.

The Bobcats play their home opener Saturday against Connecticut College in a NESCAC matchup at 11 a.m.
