LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College field hockey team outshot visiting University of Southern Maine 22-4 en route to a 4-0 victory Thursday night at Campus Avenue Field.
Bates junior Lindsey Ferguson (Barrington, R.I.) scored two goals and senior Carolyn King (Hanover, Mass.) added a goal and two assists to lead the Bobcats (2-0). Sophomore Abby Childs (Philadelphia, Pa.) added the fourth goal of the game, assisted by senior Molly Lanigan (Acton, Mass.).
Bates senior goalkeeper Sarah Sprague (Cleveland, Ohio) earned her second shutout in as many games this season, stopping three shots by the Huskies (0-5).
USM first-year goalkeeper Allie Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) made six saves.
Bates next plays its first NESCAC contest of the season on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Amherst. USM hosts Salem State Saturday at 1 p.m.
