Copeland's goal in 60th minute sends No. 22 field hockey to 1-0 win over Trinity

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior captain Elsa Copeland redirected a shot from senior captain Amy LaBelle into the back of the cage in the 60th minute of action and the No. 22 nationally ranked Bates field hockey team prevailed 1-0 over Trinity Saturday in NESCAC action.

Bates (5-3, 2-3 NESCAC) and Trinity (5-5, 1-5 NESCAC) spent 59 minutes, 23 seconds locked in a scoreless tie. Then the Bobcats earned their sixth penalty corner of the contest.

Junior Caroline Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) delivered the insert to LaBelle (Barrington, R.I.) and she fired a shot from the top of the circle. Copeland (Toronto, Ontario) stood directly in front of the cage and tipped the ball home for her third goal of the season and her second game-winning tally. It's LaBelle's third assist of the year, which leads the team.

Junior Ava Donohue (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) turned in one of her best performances of the season, recording four saves and picking up her second shutout. Nowak added a defensive save in the 37th minute.

The Bobcats recorded nine shots, with three on goal. Trinity shot the ball seven times, five of which were on target but got turned away by Donohue.

Bates field hockey is back in action on Tuesday when they visit the University of Southern Maine. The action gets underway at 7 p.m.
