Field hockey wins another thriller, prevails 2-1 in overtime over No. 24 Lynchburg

First-year Sammy Logan scores her second-game winning goal of the season

LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year Sammy Logan scored her second game-winning goal of the season and the Bates field hockey team earned a 2-1 win in overtime over No. 24 nationally ranked University of Lynchburg Saturday morning at Campus Ave. Field.

Playing in their third overtime game of the young season, the Bobcats (3-2) scored the game-winner in the 65th minute.

Senior captain Amy LaBelle (Barrington, R.I.) was able to get the ball out of the Bates end and up the right sideline to classmate Sophie O'Sullivan (Wellesley, Mass.) and the latter made a nice touch on the ball to center it toward the middle of the field. She saw Logan (Mansfield, Mass.) running ahead of the defense and delivered a perfect pass to the rookie.

Logan went one-on-one with Lynchburg goalkeeper Shay Schoones, made a move to her left and successfully shook her for an open look at the cage. Her shot went into the lower right side for the winning tally. Logan has made quite the impression in her first year of college field hockey, having also scored the game-winner in overtime against Bowdoin earlier this season. It's the second assist of O'Sullivan's career.

Bates got on the board first in Saturday's contest when junior Bella Bigelow (Alburgh, Vt.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career.

After a scoreless first half, the Bobcats earned a penalty stroke in the 35th minute due to a hard foul in the circle. Head coach Dani Kogut opted to have Bigelow take the stroke and she converted to give Bates a 1-0 lead.

But the Hornets (3-4) responded immediately. Just 18 seconds later, they fed a ball into the circle that deflected off a Bates stick to the left post. Sydney Cappallo was waiting and she deflected it into the cage for the equalizer.

The Bobcats out-shot the visitors 17-10 on the day, with 12 shots on goal to four for the Hornets. However, Lynchburg earned seven penalty corners to just four for Bates. Neither team was able to turn a penalty corner into a goal.

Schoones impressed in the cage for Lynchburg, making 10 saves. Junior goalkeeper Ava Donohue (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) earned the win while making three saves for Bates.

Bates is back in action next Saturday when they visit No. 10 nationally ranked Wesleyan in a rematch of last year's NESCAC championship game. The action gets underway at 11 a.m.
