STATS: Bates 66, UMaine-Farmington 56

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) and first-year Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) each had double-doubles and the Bates College women's basketball team held a 56-36 rebounding advantage in a 66-56 non-league win over UMaine-Farmington on Wednesday night.

Bates' win avenges a 62-59 loss a year ago in Farmington, and puts the Bobcats at 5-2 on the season. The Beavers dropped to 3-2.

Kostakis had a team-high 14 points and 15 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive glass, where Bates got 22 of its rebounds.  Yanofsky had 10 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

First-year Caitlyn Laflin (Farmingdale, Maine) led the Beavers with 20 points, 14 of them coming in the first half. Senior Karen Sirois (Augusta, Maine) filled the stat sheet with 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Senior Kari Simpson (Wells, Maine) shot 2-for-14 from the floor for six points, but grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

After relinquishing its last lead at 10-8, UMF stayed within 10 points of Bates for nearly the entire rest of the game. The Beavers fought back from a 40-30 deficit with 17:02 left in the game with a 6-0 run, as a Laflin jumper, assisted by Sirois, was sandwiched by two pairs of Sirois free throws to bring UMF back to within four points at 40-36. A 3-pointer by Bates junior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) gave the Bobcats some breathing room.

UMF closed within three points, at 53-50, after a 3-pointer by sophomore Samantha Wiley (Lincolnville, Maine), but a Kostakis layup and a hoop by first-year Teal Carroll (Norwich, Vt.), assisted by Yanofsky, pushed Bates' lead back to seven at 57-50 with 5:51 left, and the Beavers were unable to threaten from there.

Carroll finished with 10 points, and sophomore Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) and senior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) scored nine apiece. Barton had seven points in addition to six rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots.

Entering the second half with a 37-28 deficit, UMF struggled offensively in the second period, hitting only seven of 32 shots from the floor (21.9%). But the Beavers hung in the game with an 11-13 performance at the foul line.

Bates plays host to Norwich University on Saturday at 6 p.m. UMF will host Wheelock Friday at 7 p.m.
