Women's basketball team pulls away from Conn College, 67-49

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) and Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) netted 13 points apiece, leading Bates College (13-6, 4-1 NESCAC) to a 67-49 victory at Connecticut College (6-12, 0-5) Friday night.

Connecticut College sophomore Katy Serafin (Carmel, N.Y.) notched her 11th double-double of the season, dumping in a game-high 15 points with 11 boards for the hosts. Devon Kearns (Glastonbury, Conn.) added 10 points and six rebounds for the Camels in the NESCAC contest.

In a back-and-forth first half, a Devon Kearns field goal tied the game at 24 with 4:19 remaining. Serafin tallied nine points and five boards in the first stanza, keeping the game close. With five seconds left in the half, Coffin converted a layup, and Bates carried a 37-31 lead into the break.

Bates opened the second half with a suffocating 9-0 run. Kostakis keyed the rally, canning back-to-back field goals to give the visitors a 46-31 lead with 16:32 to play. The Bobcats were able to hold on for the 67-49 victory.

Jackie Powers (Andover, Mass.) and Katie Franklin each added nine points for Bates. Sarah Barton had a team-hihg six assists and tied for the team lead with Kostakis with seven rebounds.

Kate Kenly (Boxford, Mass.) and Ashley Ryall (Weare, N.H.) finished with eight points apiece for the Camels.

 

The Bobcats play at NESCAC leader Wesleyan University (12-4, 4-0) Saturday at 3 p.m.
