LEWISTON, Maine - Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) scored the game winning goal, and the only goal of the game, to put the Bates women’s soccer team past Bowdoin College 1-0 in a conference game.
The win improves the Bobcats record to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the conference, while the loss was the first of the season for Bowdoin who is now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Wagner’s unassisted goal was her second of the season and was scored with less than two minutes to play in the first half.
Tough defense and solid goalie performances kept the match tight throughout the game. Nini Spalding (San Francisco, Calif./University High School) recorded four saves for the Bobcats, while Anna Shapell (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Waynflete) stopped four of her own.
In spite of slippery conditions that caused three injuries during the game, the two teams battled a tough game. Bowdoin took 16 shots on the day, including 11 in the second half, while Bates posted 13.
Bates will travel to Connecticut College on Saturday for its first away game. Game time is set for 11 a.m. The Bobcats will return home Sunday for a match against Trinity at 11 a.m.
