Senior Terence O’Connell (Greenwich, Conn./ Greenwich) scored three goals to pace the Bates men’s soccer team past the St. Joseph’s Monks in a non-league game Sunday afternoon.
O’Connell kicked off the scoring about 20 minutes into the first half when he took a feed from sophomore Duane Pelz (Boulder Colo./Boulder) and bolted past the Monk defense for a wide open goal. Brent Morin (Hanover N.H./Hotchkiss) added the first of his two goals five minutes later on another assist from Pelz.
O’Connell followed with two goals of his own to complete the hat trick before Morin added his second goal four minutes later. Junior Atdhe Matoshi (Bronx, N.Y./Horace Mann) capped off the scoring with five minutes to go in the game taking a feed from sophomore Pat Grater (Mystic, Conn./Robert E. Fitch) and placing it in the lower left corner of the Monk goal.
Bates outshot St. Joseph’s 37 to one on the day and took 16 corner kicks to St. Joe’s took zero.
Bates continues play on the road next Saturday with a league game against Connecticut College.
