LEWISTON, Maine - Two goals in a four minute span of the second half proved to be the difference for 19th ranked Amherst (2-0-1, 2-0-0) in a 3-2 win over Bates (1-1, 0-1) on Saturday afternoon.
Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow) had a goal and an assist for the Bobcats, while Meg Coffin (Westford, MA/Phillips Andover) added the other tally for Bates.
Stephanie Yesnick (Arlington, Va./National Cathedral) opened the scoring for the visitors in the 24th minute of the first half with a low, angled shot through the Bates defense.
Nearly forty minutes of scoreless soccer followed before Coffin headed home Wagner’s corner kick in the 60th minute to even the score.
Amherst recaptured the lead eight minutes later as Amy Armstrong (Avon, Conn./Loomis Chafee) scored off an assist from Heather Nowak (New Haven, CT/Choate). Armstrong returned the favor in the 72nd minute, passing inside the box to Nowak, who tapped in the game winner. Wagner capped the scoring in the 75th minute for the Bobcats, scoring off a direct kick to cut the deficit to one.
Nini Spalding (San Francisco, Calif./University High School) finished with seven saves for Bates, while Piper Cromwell (San Rafael, Calif./Marin) stopped six Bates shots for the Lord Jeffs.
Bates will host rival Bowdoin at 4 pm this Tuesday, September 20.
