The Bates College men’s soccer team battled to a hard fought 1-1 tie Saturday in a NESCAC contest against the Lord Jeffs of Amherst.



Amherst kicked off the scoring with 25 minutes left in the first half, when Joseph Gannon (Hanson, MA/Noble & Greenough) drove a rebound into the lower left corner of the goal past Bates goalie Aaron Schleichter (Londonderry, N.H., Londonderry).



Bates responded with 23 minutes left in the second half as sophomore Duane Pelz (Boulder Colo., Boulder) took a feed from teammate Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H., Hotchkiss) and lofted it over Amherst goalie William Lockwood (Vancouver, Wash., Jesuit).



Both goalies were recorded key saves in the second half, as neither team was able to score in the final 43 minutes of the game. Lockwood finished with five saves and Schleichter anchored the Bates defense with four saves of his own.



Bates (0-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference) faces St. Joseph’s Sunday at home at 2 p.m.
