Women's soccer team ties Colby; will play at Williams Sunday

WATERVILLE, Maine – Becky Macdonald (Danvers, Mass.) scored on a long shot with 58 seconds left in regulation to help Bates College to a 2-2 overtime tie with Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference women’s soccer Saturday.

The tie with Colby creates a tie with Williams in the NESCAC standings that forces the Bobcats to play at Williams tomorrow at noon.

Bates ends the regular season at 5-3-1, tied for fourth with Williams. But Williams will host Sunday's contest by virtue of the teams' head-to-head play, in which Williams topped Bates 2-1 on Oct. 8 in Williamstown, Mass.

Colby (7-2-4, 3-2-4 NESCAC) had two leads in the game. Kara McCabe (Watertown, Conn.) scored off an assist from her sister, Katie McCabe (Watertown, Conn.), just 10:56 into the opening half as the Mules led 1-0 at intermission.

Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) tallied unassisted at 7:34 of the second half to tie the game at 1-1.

The Mules went ahead again about seven minutes later when Libba Cox (Guilford, Conn.) scored off an assist from Laura Williamson (Manchester, Conn.).

Macdonald’s goal came off an assist from Kim Alexander (Cumberland, Maine).

Liza Benson (Orchid, Fla.) stopped 12 shots for Colby, while Nini Spalding (San Francisco, Calif.) made eight saves for Bates (10-3-1, 5-3-1).
