Bates women's soccer shuts out Wesleyan, 3-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Two early goals helped carry the Bates College women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over host Wesleyan University Saturday. The game was played at Connecticut College, due to Wesleyan's flooded home fields.

Junior forward Kim Alexander (Cumberland, Maine) scored her team-high 10th goal of the season just three and a half minutes into the contest, on an assist from sophomore midfielder Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.).

Junior forward Jessie Gargiulo (Boxborough, Mass.) added her sixth goal of the year less than 10 minutes later, converting a feed from junior defender Becky Macdonald (Danvers, Mass.). It was Gargiulo's first goal since a hat trick against Babson College on Sept. 29.

First-year Amy Werblin (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored her second goal this season before the close of the first half, on an assist from classmate Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.).

Sophomore goalie Nini Spalding (San Francisco) started the game before giving way to first-year Caitlin Demko (South Windsor, Conn.) for the final nine minutes. With five and two saves, respectively, the two combined for Bates' third shutout this season, and second in a row.

Bates (8-3, 4-3 NESCAC) held a 28-11 advantage in shots on goal over Wesleyan (1-6-2, 0-4-2). Andrea Giuliano (11 saves, three goals allowed) and Gavi Elkind (7 saves, 0 goals allowed) split time in net for the Cardinals.

Bates plays its final home game on Saturday, Oct. 22, against Middlebury.
