LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College forwards Terence O'Connell (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H./Hotchkiss School) scored back-to-back goals less than three minutes apart in the second half to propel Bates to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Tufts University in a NESCAC men's soccer contest on Parents Day at Russell Street Field Saturday afternoon.
"I think it shows a lot of character for our guys, to come from behind like that," said Bates head coach George Purgavie. "They worked their butts off. Every NESCAC game is so important, and this one was a dogfight."
O'Connell, a senior, headed in a corner kick from teammate Ithai Schori ( New York, N.Y./Choate Rosemary Hall) midway through the second half to tie the game at 1-1. The score was the team-leading seventh for O'Connell, this week's NESCAC Player of the Week.
Then, with 26:26 remaining in regulation, Morin one-timed a rocket from 40 yards out that scraped under the crossbar to help the host Bobcats (5-1-1, 3-1-1) move ahead of the Jumbos (3-4, 2-2) in the league standings.
Tufts got on the scoreboard first with 36:32 to play in the second half, as senior midfielder Mike Guigli (N. Stonington, Conn./Wheeler) charged up the center of the field and threaded a shot through several players and inside the left goalpost. Sophomore Dan Jozwiak (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) was credited with the assist.
"There were two outstanding goals in the game: (Guigli's) and (Morin's)," said Tufts head coach Ralph Ferrigno. "(Morin's) shot looked like it hit a low-flying seagull or something. What a shot."
First-year goalkeeper Brian Dulmovits (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) had a pair of saves for Tufts.
Sophomore Aaron Schleicher (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) had seven saves for Bates.
Bates plays next at the Universityof Southern Maineon Tuesday at 4 p.m.
