Sophomore Christian Beal went 6-8 with five runs scored, a double, a triple, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base in Bates baseball's doubleheader sweep of Bowdoin on Saturday.
Beal (Flossmoor, Ill.) went 4-4 in game one, a 6-0 Bates victory. He doubled home Jack Arend in the third inning and got the offense going again in the top of the fifth, singling down the right field line with one away. Bryan Gotti drew a walk and with two outs Will Sylvia singled in Beal.
Up 4-0, the Bobcats scored twice in the sixth and once again Beal was in the middle of things. With one out, Jon Lindgren singled and Justin White and Arend drew back-to-back walks, loading the bases. Beal singled in Lindgren and Gotti drove in White with a sacrifice fly.
Bates' win in game one clinched the Bobcats' third straight appearance in the upcoming four-team double elimination NESCAC Championships.
Beal continued his hot hitting in game two, going 2-4 with three runs scored, a triple and a walk in an 11-1 Bates win.
On the season, Beal is hitting a team-leading .371 with nine doubles, two triples, a home run and 15 RBIs.
