First-year Caroline Sweeney (New Canaan, Conn.) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.80) and the 100 free (53.65) at the Maine State Meet over the weekend. The Bates women's and men's swimming and diving teams both took first place for the fourth time in as many years, with dominating performances from both squads.
Bates' women's team scored 1,105.5 points over two days to defeat runner-up Bowdoin (907) by 97.5. Maine took third place with 596, followed by Colby (416.5), the University of New England (153), St. Joseph's (44) and Maine Maritime (31).
Sweeney also delivered strong relay performances, helping the Bates women take third in the 200 yard freestyle relay, second in the 200 yard medley relay and third in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
