The 10th annual induction ceremony of the Bates College
Scholar-Athlete Society was held on Saturday, May 24, 2014, during
Commencement Weekend, honoring four alumni, former women's cross
country and track and field coach Carolyn Court, and 35 members of the
Class of 2014. The event’s keynote speaker was former Bates
women's soccer coach Diane Boettcher, who was also inducted into
the society.
This year’s alumni inductees into the Bates
Scholar-Athlete Society include: James F. Callahan, Jr. '65, a former Bates
football player who became a 23-year Trustee of the College and has
shown lifelong leadership in and dedication to academics and
athletics; David N.
Hild '84, a football and lacrosse standout at Bates
who remains a dedicated alumnus along with his wife, Susan Miller
Hild '84; Julie Roche
Simplicio '91, a Bates star in both volleyball and
basketball who remains vitally active with her alma mater, as a
class agent and member of the College Key, among other ventures;
and Elizabeth "Liz"
Wanless '04, an All-American athlete in both track and
field and volleyball at Bates who became one of the top female
shot-putters in the world, and now is an instructor of sport
administration and Coordinator of Undergraduate Sport
Administration at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Court,
who retired as Bates' women's cross country and track and field
coach in 2004 after a remarkable, pioneering 25-year career, was
this year's staff inductee.
