James F. Callahan, Jr. '65 shakes

Jim grew up in Salem, Massachusetts, and came to Bates in 1961.
He played on the football team during his four years at the
college. After graduating in 1965 with a degree in economics, Jim
went to the Graduate School of Management at Rutgers University
where he earned his MBA in 1966.
Following Rutgers, Jim began a 34 year career with Arthur
Andersen & Co., where he became an Audit and Business Advisory
Partner until his retirement in March 2000. During Jim’s
career, he served clients in a number of industries, including
manufacturing, mining, independent power production, and regulated
electric, gas and telecommunication utilities. He was the Director
of Andersen’s Energy Industry Program in the Northeast.
Currently, Jim is a member of the Board of Directors of Casella
Waste Systems, Inc. serving on its Nomination and Governance
Committee and as Chair of its Audit Committee.
Jim has been active in a number of civic and community
organizations over the years. He was a Trustee of Bates College for
23 years and currently serves as co-chair of the Oren B. Cheney
Society of former Bates trustees and trustee emeriti. During
various periods of his time on the Board, Jim served as Chair of
the Board of Overseers, the Budget and Finance Committee, and the
Audit Committee. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees
of the Hogan Regional Developmental Center and a member of the
Citizens Advisory Board for the Northeast Region of
Massachusetts’ Department of Developmental
Services.
Jim also served on the boards of the following
organizations:
- United Way of Massachusetts Bay
- Family Service of Greater Boston
- Transitional Employment Enterprises, Inc.
- Lynnfield Initiative for the Elderly
- New England Gas Association
- Concerned Citizens for the Mentally Retarded
Jim and his wife, Elsa, live in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, where
they raised their three children. They now are enjoying their time
with their six grandchildren.
In recognition of Jim’s career as an athlete, and for
his dedication, leadership and commitment to academics and
athletics, it is an honor to offer membership in the Bates
