David Hild graduated from Bates in 1984 with a B.A. in English.
His senior thesis was on Hamlet. David earned eight
varsity letters during his time as a Bobcat on both the football
and lacrosse teams.
Playing alongside great teammates and for coaches like Web
Harrison and Chick Leahey, the 1982 football team finished 6-2,
winning the CBB and finishing ranked in the top 3 in New England.
As a linebacker for the Bobcats, David earned the prestigious Alan
C. Goddard Award.
As a four-year starter as a defenseman on the lacrosse team,
David led the ’84 team to the only undefeated regular season
in Bates lacrosse history; 11-0 before falling to Bowdoin in the
ECAC semifinals.
More significantly, during his senior year he fell in love with
Susan Miller, also Class of 1984 and married her a year later on
August 24, 1985.
Following his graduation from Bates, David began his teaching
career with four years at the Horace Mann School, five years at The
Bishop’s School and currently as a faculty member at his alma
mater, Kingswood-Oxford School, for the past 21 years. Both he and
Susan have conducted numerous off-campus interviews, hosted Bates
gatherings, and served as Reunion Committee members. This year they
are the chairs of the 1984’s 30th Reunion gift
committee.
David is a member of the College Key, regularly plays in the
Bates Football Golf Outing, and with help from Ira Waldman, Steve
Brackett and Peter Wyman was a member of the winning foursome in
the inaugural event. He faithfully plays in the alumni lacrosse
game each year and was instrumental in the writing campaign to
“turf” Garcelon Field.
David and Susan are proud of their two sons: David, a 2011
Middlebury grad (and two-time lacrosse All-American) who now works
for ESPN, and Steven, who ‘got it right’ and chose to
be a Bobcat! Steven is a history major, Class of ’15, who
will graduate as a four-year contributor to both the football and
lacrosse teams.
In recognition of David’s outstanding career as an
athlete, and for his dedication, leadership and commitment to
academics and athletics, it is an honor to offer membership in the
Bates Scholar-Athlete Society to David Hild.
