LEWISTON, Maine -- The new Bates Bobcat mascot made its official debut Saturday at Garcelon Field, bringing a new dose of garnet-and-white energy to the sidelines and stands.

Its debut marked the culmination of a year-long project to bring a new Bates Bobcat to life. The development process included input from stakeholders across campus, including students, staff, faculty, and Bates alumni, from the character's initial design through the finished mascot.

This project was about more than creating a new look for the Bobcat. The goal was to build a mascot program that creates memorable experiences, strengthens traditions, and brings students, alumni, families, fans, and the broader community together around Bates.

The character was designed by Tom Sapp–Real Characters, Inc., with Chicago Mascot Co. bringing the design to life through the creation of the costume. Bates Athletics thanks both partners for their creativity and collaboration.
 

Meet the Mascot Team

Behind the Bobcat is a team made up entirely of Bates students.

Auditions were held last spring to select the inaugural group of student performers and handlers who will bring the character to life at athletic contests, campus events and appearances throughout the community.

The team has trained in character development, performance techniques, consistency, and the unique challenges of performing in and supporting a mascot costume.  Interested in joining the mascot team? Contact Tia Day at tday2@bates.edu for more information.
 

Bring the Bobcat to Your Event

And now, the Bobcat is ready to roam.

Bates College departments, recognized student organizations, nonprofit organizations, businesses and community members can request the Bobcat for appearances throughout the year.

Appearance requests should be submitted at least two weeks in advance and are subject to performer availability, event schedules and approval. Requests received with less than two weeks' notice may be considered based on availability.
 

Appearance Type

Rates cover appearances of up to one hour. Appearances exceeding one hour are subject to additional charges. Additional fees may also apply for significant travel or special accommodations.

Appearance fees directly support the Bates mascot program, including compensation for student performers and handlers, costume maintenance and cleaning, and the upkeep and replacement of mascot apparel and accessories.

Every appearance includes a Bates-approved student handler, while Bates Athletics events and College priorities take precedence when scheduling.
