LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior captain Elsa Copeland scored in the 50th minute and the Bates field hockey team controlled the action from start to finish in a 1-0 win over Thomas College Tuesday night at Campus Ave. Field.

The Bobcats (2-2) recorded their first shutout of the season and also became the first team to blank the Terriers (2-3) this year.

With the game stuck in a scoreless tie in the fourth quarter, first-year Sammy Logan (Mansfield, Mass.) fed the ball into the circle from the right side. Thomas goalkeeper Eliya Drummond made a play on the ball but it stayed stuck near the cage. Copeland (Toronto, Ontario) was able to win the battle in a scrum of players for the ball for her second goal of the season and the fourth game-winning tally of her career.

Drummond made five saves on the night for the Terriers and junior goalkeeper Ava Donohue (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) did not have to make a save for Bates, as Thomas did not record a shot on goal. 

Overall, Bates out-shot Thomas 14-2. The Bobcats earned 12 penalty corners but did not convert any of them. Thomas did not earn a penalty corner in the contest.

Bates hosts No. 24 nationally ranked Lynchburg this Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
