CLINTON, N.Y. -- Bates junior
Alexa Queen scored the first goal of her collegiate career but No. 15 nationally ranked Hamilton scored in the 72nd minute to defeat the 10th ranked Bobcats 2-1 in double overtime Saturday afternoon in NESCAC action.
The Continentals (2-0, 1-0 NESCAC) earned a penalty corner in the second overtime period. Alden Duserick delivered the insert and Isabelle Nahon's shot got deflected by a Bates defender but was still able to trickle past the goal line to end the game.
After a scoreless first half, Bates (1-2, 1-2 NESCAC) got on the board first in the 40th minute of action. Sophomore
Catherine Russell (Newton, Mass.) connected with Queen (Pittsburgh, Pa.) for the tally. It's the first assist of Russell's collegiate career to go along with Queen's first goal.
Up 1-0 through three, the Bobcats could not hold onto the lead in the fourth quarter. Shaw Huston delivered the insert on a penalty corner in the 47th minute for Hamilton and Nahon found Eva Bell for the equalizer.
The game stood tied at one at the end of regulation and the Bobcats dominated the first seven-on-seven overtime period, tallying seven shots to just one for Hamilton. The Bobcats earned four penalty corners in overtime, but were unable to convert them into goals. Kelly Janssen shined in the cage for the hosts, making nine saves on the afternoon. Morgan Clarke added a defensive save as well for the Continentals.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Continentals tallied the game-winner just 1:39 into double OT.
Bates out-shot Hamilton 20-12, with 11 shots on goal for Bates and only four for Hamilton.
The Bobcats look to bounce back this Tuesday when they host Thomas College at 7 p.m.
