NEW LONDON, Conn. — Behind a four-goal performance from senior
Lauren Wong and a decisive fourth-quarter surge, the Bates women's lacrosse team earned a 14-9 NESCAC road win at Connecticut College, Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field (U.S. Coast Guard Academy).
Bates (7-7, 3-6 NESCAC) led early, weathered a midgame push from the Camels, and then closed the game with three unanswered goals in the final period to secure the conference victory.
The Bobcats came out sharp, building a 5–2 lead after one quarter.
Caroline Keating opened the scoring, and Wong added a pair of first-period goals, including a free-position finish during a man-up opportunity.
Connecticut College (2-9, 0-8 NESCAC) responded in the second, scoring four times to erase a three-goal deficit and tie the game at 6-6 with 4:19 remaining before halftime. Bates regained the lead just before the break when
Laci Raveis converted a free-position attempt with four seconds left, sending the Bobcats into halftime ahead by one.
The Camels continued to apply pressure in the third quarter, pulling even once at 8–8 at the 8:30 mark. Bates answered immediately, as Raveis finished a feed from
Lucy Taylor to restore the lead. Keating followed with a free-position goal, and Raveis added another down the stretch as the Bobcats built an 11–8 advantage before Connecticut College trimmed the margin to 11–9 heading into the fourth.
Bates took control for good in the final quarter.
Wong scored her fourth of the day 2:28 into the period to extend the lead, and the Bobcat defense held the Camels scoreless over the final 15 minutes. Grace Yonchak added a goal off an assist from Zoe Schaedle, and Haley Wines capped the scoring with a late finish set up by Taylor.
Wong led all scorers with four goals, while Raveis (three goals, two assists) and Keating (three goals, assist) powered a balanced Bates attack. Taylor facilitated the offense with three helpers.
Bates controlled possession throughout, winning 20 draw controls to Connecticut College's four, with Keating securing 11 of the Bobcats' allotment. Goalkeeper Virginia Avery made eight saves to earn the win.
The garnet and white, with a postseason berth in sight, concludes its regular-season slate Wednesday evening with a 7:00 p.m. NESCAC home contest vs. No. 12 Colby.
