Baseball's offense explodes in 34-7 win over University of Maine at Farmington

It's the most runs in one game for the Bobcats since 1985

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Gibby Sullivan, junior Henry Prince, and senior Andrew Fortunato combined for 20 runs batted in and the Bates baseball team rolled to a 34-7 win over the University of Maine at Farmington Wednesday afternoon.

It's the most runs in one game for the Bates baseball team since they scored a program-record 37 runs against Thomas College in 1985. Wednesday's contest was called after the top of the seventh inning due to darkness.

Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine) went 5-6 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, four runs scored, and eight RBIs. Prince (McLean, Va.) finished 4-5 with two runs scored, a double, and seven RBIs. And Fortunato (Fairfield, Conn.) hit the first two home runs of his collegiate career, including a grand slam, to finish with five RBIs.

Meanwhile, senior Jack Margiloff (Rye, N.Y.) joined Sullivan in finishing a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-4 with six runs scored, a double, a home run, and three walks. Junior Luke Yoon (Honolulu, Hawaii), sophomore David Swift (Yarmouth, Maine), first-year Liam Garrett (Westfield, N.J.), and senior Joe Yoxall (Dallas, Texas) all recorded multi-hit games as Bates (12-3) finished with 28 hits on the afternoon. It's the most hits in one game for the Bobcats since they tallied 29 against Emerson in 2010 and their four home runs are their most in one game since Bates smacked four against Husson, also in 2010. On top of that, the Bobcats drew 10 walks against UMF pitching on Wednesday, adding to their consistent offensive output that included 15 runs in the fourth inning and 10 more in the fifth inning.

A Tyler Rosa RBI single gave the Beavers (5-9) a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first. But the Bobcats responded with four runs off UMF starter Will Buchholz (0-1) in the bottom half of the frame. With one out, Margiloff hit a solo home run to left, his third long ball of the season. Sullivan and Swift followed with back-to-back singles and Prince doubled both of them home for a 3-1 lead. Then with two down, Yoon singled in Prince to make the score 4-1.

First-year starting pitcher Brady Thompson (Newark, Del.) tossed a scoreless top of the second and the Bobcats added to their lead in the bottom half of the frame. With one away, junior captain Keagan Ryan (Salem, N.H.) got hit by a pitch and promptly stole second base. Margiloff followed with a double to left. Ryan advanced just 90 feet as he had to wait to see if the high fly would drop in, which it did. Sullivan drove in Ryan with a sacrifice fly to right and Swift singled home Margiloff. A balk moved Swift to second and he scored on a Prince single, extending the lead to 7-1.

The Beavers took advantage of three walks, two hit-by-pitches, and a Bates error to score four runs on no hits in the third inning.

With the score 7-5 in favor of Bates, the Bobcats tallied two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Yoxall doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ryan drove in Yoxall with a sacrifice fly and Margiloff followed with a single to center. Sullivan doubled home Margiloff and Bates led 9-5.

The Beavers got the bats going in the top of the fourth. Jameson Bloch singled to lead off the frame and one out later Rosa singled him to third. A Matt Marquis RBI single made the score 9-6 and back-to-back walks forced in another run.

Bates summoned junior Henry Kolani (Tarrytown, N.Y.) from the bullpen and he got a fly out to right and a pop out to third to put out the fire.

Now up 9-7, the Bobcats put the game away with 15 runs in the bottom of the fourth. It all started with a one-out double off the bat of Yoon. Incredibly, sophomore John Federico (Durham, N.C.) and Yoon both batted three times in the fourth inning alone. The frame featured a two-RBI double and a two-RBI single from Sullivan and two two-RBI singles from Prince.

Kolani (1-0) worked a 1-2-3 top of the fifth and history almost repeated itself when Bates scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Remarkably, the 10 runs all came with two outs. It all started with Fortunato's pinch-hit solo home run. Margiloff drew a walk and Sullivan hit a line shot over the fence for his third homer of the year. The inning culminated with Fortunato's grand slam, making the score 34-7.

First-year Joe Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) tossed two scoreless innings in his collegiate debut to finish off the game for the Bobcats.

Bates is back in action on Friday when they travel to Bowdoin for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
