Westmoreland Victorious at No. 1 Singles in Bates’ Match at No. 20 Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Bates College women's tennis team dropped a 6–1 decision at No. 20 Williams College Sunday in NESCAC action at the Multipurpose Recreation Center.

The Ephs swept all three doubles matches to take an early 3–0 lead. Williams claimed the No. 1 doubles match, 6–3, while earning 6–0 and 7–5 victories at the second and third positions, respectively.

Bates picked up its lone point in singles play thanks to a strong effort from junior captain, Iris Westmoreland, at the top of the lineup. Westmoreland defeated Zoe Yao in straight sets, 6–3, 6–4, to account for the Bobcats' victory.

Williams (4-1, 2-1 NESCAC) secured the remaining five singles matches in straight sets. Julia Zhang won at No. 2 singles, while Ayanna Varma, Ellie Stark, and Jane Ladaga also collected victories for the Ephs at the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions.

Mia Thomann earned the win at No. 3 singles after Bates' Elise Hepburn was forced to retire.

The Bobcats (2-8, 1-3 NESCAC) remains on the road for its next action, a visit to No. 10 Bowdoin on Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m.
