BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bates men's soccer earned a statement win Tuesday night, defeating in-state rival Bowdoin 2-0. It marks the second straight year the Bobcats have beaten the nationally ranked Polar Bears, and the first time they've done so in back-to-back seasons since 1998–1999.
With the victory, Bates remains undefeated on the year at 4-0-1 (1-0-1 NESCAC).
The breakthrough came just before halftime in the 44th minute (43:40). Sophomore
Hewitt Stevenson slipped a perfectly timed through ball to teammate
Andrew Jean Baptiste, who buried his first collegiate goal to give the Bobcats the lead.
Bates extended its advantage in the 76th minute (75:19). Awarded a free kick just outside the box, senior
Tomas Alberola converted with a clean strike (second of season) to make it 2-0.
The Bobcats outshot Bowdoin 17-9, including an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper
George Nassar secured the win with four saves between the posts to secure the victors a third-consecutive shutout.
Bates returns to Russell Street Field on Saturday (Alumni Day) to host Wesleyan at 2 p.m.
