LEWISTON, Maine – Bates women's soccer made a statement in their home opener Wednesday night, rolling to an 8-0 non-conference victory over visiting Thomas College, which included five Bobcats scoring their first collegiate goals.
Sophomore Eleanor Martin wasted little time getting the Bobcats on the board, firing a shot from the right side of the 18 that slipped past the Terriers' keeper just 10 minutes in (9:44).
Teammate Nikki Boyd doubled the lead in the 32nd minute (31:45) with her first collegiate goal, burying a loose ball at the top of the box after a Bates corner.
First-year Sydney Walker made an immediate impact with back-to-back goals in the 34th (33:59) and 44th (43:14) minutes, sending the Bobcats into halftime up 4-0.
The momentum carried into the second half. Junior Rachel Suh struck in the 54th minute (53:25) off a perfect cross from first-year Lanie Riddle. Junior Ruby Hill scored her first career goal just a minute later off a touch from Martin (54:46).
The floodgates stayed open as junior Nicole Tandetnitskiy netted her first collegiate goal in the 60th minute, again assisted by Riddle. Senior captain Samantha Bunar capped the scoring in the 80th minute (79:19), slotting home a through ball from first-year Aurora Rella-Neill for her first career tally.
The Bobcats were dominant on both ends, out-shooting Thomas 42-0 with 20 shots on target. Junior Sydney Litney (45:00) and first-year Brady Jacobson split time in goal to combine for the shutout.
Bates (2-1) returns to Russell Street Field on Saturday, hosting UMass-Boston in another non-conference match-up. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
