BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates baseball team dropped a pair of games to Bowdoin on Saturday, falling 3-2 in game one and 8-2 in game two of their doubleheader with the Polar Bears.
Bates (4-13, 2-4 NESCAC East) returns to action Tuesday when they host Dean at 3 p.m.
Game One: Bowdoin 3, Bates 2
Reuben Siegel's bunt combined with a Bates throwing error gave Bowdoin a 3-2 walk-off win over the Bates baseball team in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
With the score tied at two, Cal Thompson singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. He stole second base and with Thompson now in scoring position, Siegel put down a bunt. The throw to first got away and Thompson scored to win the game for Bowdoin.
It was a tough loss for the Bobcats, as they received another strong starting pitching performance. Junior
Diego Sarabia (Mableton, Ga.) tossed five innings, giving up only two runs on seven hits. He struck out six batters in a no-decision.
Trailing 1-0, Bates got on the board against Bowdoin starter Alastair Rose in the top of the third. With one out, junior
Joe Yoxall (Dallas, Texas) singled up the middle. He stole second and advanced to third on a Bowdoin throwing error. Sophomore
Keagan Ryan (Salem, N.H.) drove in Yoxall with a ground out to short.
Bowdoin got another run across in the bottom of the third, but the Bobcats answered immediately. With two outs in the top of the fourth, senior captain
Brandon Biggane (Rensselaer, N.Y.) doubled to left. Junior
Jack Margiloff (Rye, N.Y.) doubled him home, tying the game at two.
The Bobcats put runners on base each of the next three innings but couldn't push the go-ahead run across. Bates left eight runners on base while tallying eight hits in the contest. Yoxall had a big game, going 3-3 with a run scored, a steal, and a walk. Senior
Ben Genser (Newton, Mass.) was 2-2 with a walk.
Will Bordes (2-0) pitched an inning of shutout ball to get the win for Bowdoin.
Game Two: Bowdoin 8, Bates 2
The Bobcats only tallied three hits and the Polar Bears scored four times in the first inning to run away with an 8-2 win over Bates in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.
Down 7-0, the Bobcats picked up a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. With two outs, Biggane drew a walk and Margiloff doubled him home. Then Margiloff came around to score on a Bowdoin error.
But that was it for Bates, with Bowdoin's Jackson Melendy turning in a dominating performance, going six and two thirds innings and striking out 10 batters while only allowing one run on two hits.
Meanwhile, six Bobcat pitchers struggled to contain the Polar Bear offense. Nine walks issued by Bates pitching didn't help matters, as the Polar Bears scored eight runs on eight hits.
Genser, Ryan, and Margiloff each recorded hits for Bates.
