Eight Bobcats Honored on College Sports Communicators Swimming & Diving Academic All-District® Team

Cory, Johnson, Palmer, and Somridhivej  selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists

LEWISTON, Maine -- Eight Bobcats have been selected to the College Sports Communicators Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Academic All-District® Team, announced Tuesday. Max Cory, Tim Johnson, Marrich Somridhivej, and John Weigel of the men's squad, and Sarah Palmer, Talia Skaistis, Amber Zeng, and Cora Zuwallack from the women's roster, have each earned recognition on this elite list.

Cory, a junior biochemistry major, lands on this elite list for the second time with a GPA of 3.51.  Now a 10-time All-American, Cory broke the NCAA Division III record in the 100-yard freestyle and won the first national championship in Bates swimming and diving history, March 22 in Greensboro, N.C. The native of Dublin, Calif. raced to the finish in 42.88 seconds in the championship final, breaking the previous D3 record of 42.98 seconds set seven years ago by Emory's Oliver Smith. 

Max also continues to dazzle in the classroom as a two-time CSCAA Scholar All-American and NESCAC All-Academic selection.

Johnson, a biochemistry major hailing from Brewster, Mass., owns a cumulative grade-point average of 3.78. He placed 12th in the 200-yard backstroke at the the NCAA Division III national championship meet with a prelims time of 1:47.40 and a consolation final time of 1:47.60, earning him All-America honors. It's the first All-America finish for Johnson in an individual event, and he is now a five-time All-American overall. 

Palmer, owning a perfect 4.0 GPA as a mathematics major, makes her All-District® debut. The sophomore, who hails from nearby Brunswick, Maine, broke her own program record in the 200-yard breaststroke with her time of 2:16.41 in the consolation final, good for 10th place overall at Nationals and All-America honors.  Sarah is now a four-time All-American.

Skaistis, a senior from New York City, possesses an impressive 3.87 grade-point average as an English major. Also minoring in philosophy, Talia is a two-time NESCAC All-Academic selection.

Somridhivej, a resident of South Windsor, Conn., maintains a 3.91 grade-point average as a biology major. Marrich, along with Cory, Johnson, and first-year Nate Oppenheim, finished second place in prelims in 3:12.76 and followed that up with the fastest 400-yard medley relay ever swam by a NESCAC school with their school-record time of 3:12.09 in the championship final, good for third place at Nationals. It's the best relay finish at the NCAA Championships in Bates swimming history. 

Marrich is a also a reigning member of the NESCAC All-Academic Team, and is a CSCAA Scholar All-American.

Weigel, who has yet to declare a major, currently owns a GPA of 3.58. Hailing from Iowa City, Iowa, the sophomore, along with Cory, Oppenheim, and Somridhivej, teamed up to capture the NESCAC title in the 200 free relay, the first conference relay championship ever for the Bobcats.

Zeng, also undeclared, lands on this elite list after authoring a 3.84 GPA. From South Windsor, Conn., the NESCAC All-Academic pick took eighth in the consolation final of the 200-yard breaststroke at the NESCAC Championships (2:28.31) after recording a prelims time of 2:26.01.

Zuwallack, who has yet to declare a major, recorded a hefty 3.92 GPA to earn an All-District® spot. A resident of East Falmouth, Mass., Zuwallack placed seventh overall in the 1,650-yard freestyle in representing the garnet and white at the NESCAC Championship meet.

Cory, Johnson, Palmer, and Somridhivej have been selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced April 23.

The Division II and III CSC Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2024-25 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs. The NAIA CSC Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA governance structure.
