LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates baseball team won a 3-2 extra-innings thriller in game one, and followed that up with a convincing 20-7 win in game two, sweeping visiting Bard College in a twin bill Saturday at Leahey Field.
With the victories, the Bobcats (10-14) swept the Raptors (3-24-1) in the three-game series. Bates has now won six of their last seven games.
The Bobcats are back in action Tuesday when they host Thomas College at 3:30 p.m.
Game One: Bates 3, Bard 2 (8 innings)
Junior
Gibby Sullivan doubled home senior
Ben Genser in the bottom of the eighth inning
and the Bates baseball team defeated Bard College 3-2 in walk-off fashion in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
With the game in extra innings and the score tied at two, Genser (Newton, Mass.) doubled to left-center off Bard starting pitcher Bryant Elliott (0-4) to lead off the bottom of the eighth. First-year
David Swift (Yarmouth, Maine) followed with a grounder up the middle. Bard second baseman Xavier Webb made a great effort, getting to the ball behind the bag. But Swift beat it out for an infield single, putting runners at the corners.
Sullivan (Yarmouth, Maine) stepped to the plate and he crushed a 2-1 pitch to deep right-center. It landed for a double and Genser trotted home with the winning run.
The Bobcats had a 2-0 lead through four innings as junior RHP
Diego Sarabia (Mableton, Ga.) was on point, holding Bard without a hit.
Bates wasted no time getting on the board. Junior
Jack Margiloff (Rye, N.Y.) walked with one away in the bottom of the first. He stole second and Genser drove him home with a single through the left side.
In the bottom of the third, the Bobcats added to their advantage. Margiloff actually struck out to begin the inning, but reached thanks to a passed ball. Genser hit into a fielder's choice for the first out. Then he stole second and Swift delivered an RBI single for a 2-0 Bates lead.
Sarabia struck out a career-high eight batters in the contest, but he ran into some trouble in the top of the fifth. He hit Andrew Plenn to begin the frame and one out later Jeremy Hall tallied the first hit of the game for Bard with a single to right. A flyout advanced Plenn to third and with runners at the corners Hall stole second. Junior catcher
Liam Yardley (Keene, N.H.) made a good throw to second, but a miscommunication between the Bates middle infielders allowed the ball to go into center field. Plenn scored to cut the Bates lead to 2-1. Webb followed with an RBI single to plate Hall and the game stood tied at two.
Sophomore
Nolan Hobbs (South Portland, Maine) entered the game to pitch for the Bobcats in the top of the sixth. He turned in a dominating performance, retiring all nine batters he faced. Hobbs (1-0) picked up a well-deserved win when Sullivan doubled home Genser in the eighth.
Elliott went the distance for Bard, scattering 11 hits over seven-plus innings. He struck out seven and walked two while throwing 119 pitches.
Genser paced the Bates offense in game one, going 3-4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI.
Game Two: Bates 20, Bard 7
The Bobcats fell behind early in game two but they took the lead for good in the bottom of the second and never looked back on their way to a 20-7 win over Bard, completing the three-game sweep.
Trailing 2-0, Bates took advantage of four straight walks issued by Bard starter Charlie Lehr (0-7) to start the second inning of action. First-year
Max Dushney (Ashland, Mass.) drew a walk with the bases full, cutting the Bard lead to 2-1. With one out, junior
Joe Yoxall (Dallas, Texas) hit a sacrifice fly, tying the game at two. A wild pitch plated senior captain
Brandon Biggane (Rensselaer, N.Y.) and Bates led 3-2 without recording a hit in the inning.
Margiloff recorded the first hit of the game for the Bobcats when he led off the bottom of the third with a double. He stole third base and Swift crushed a two-run home run to extend the lead to 5-2.
The Bobcats tallied three more runs in the fourth, followed by six in the fifth and six in the sixth.
Dushney went 4-4 in game two, scoring three runs, driving in two runs, and drawing a walk along the way. Margiloff had a strong day as well, going 3-4 with a double, a stolen base, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Yoxall finished 2-3 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk. Swift and first-year
John Federico (Durham, N.H.) drove in three runs apiece. Junior
Andrew Fortunato (Fairfield, Conn.) recorded his first collegiate hit in the contest. As a team, the Bobcats tallied 15 hits, matching their season-high.
Senior
Ian McAslan (Baltimore, Md.) got the start for Bates and earned the win, going five innings and giving up three runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out four. McAslan (2-1) threw 91 pitches on his way to his second win in his last three starts.
