Men's lacrosse sets program record for goals in one game in 28-8 win over MMA

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Colin Eaton scored the first five goals of his collegiate career and the Bates men's lacrosse team broke the program record for goals in one game in a 28-8 victory over Maine Maritime Academy Wednesday evening at Garcelon Field.

Eaton (Acton, Mass.) scored all five of his goals in the second half, as the Bobcats (6-1) opened up a big lead on the Mariners (3-4) in a dominant showing from the hosts. Bates broke the previous program record of 27 goals in one game, set in 2014 against Husson.

First-year Jack Goldbach (West Caldwell, N.J.) led all players with eight points on the day, tallying three goals and dishing out a career-high five assists. Sophomore Gray Doyle (Summit, N.J.) tallied four goals and sophomore Jack Markert (Centreville, Va.) notched the first three goals and first two assists of his collegiate career. Markert also scooped up six ground balls. Senior Javi Werner (Brookline, Mass.) tallied a hat trick and sophomore Riley McClure (Georgetown, Mass.) chipped in two goals for Bates, as 14 different players scored in the victory.

The Bobcats found themselves in a 1-0 hole early, but burst out of it with a 5-0 run. They led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and started the second quarter on another 5-0 run to go up 10-2. The second quarter proved to be a high-scoring affair, with Bates outscoring MMA 10-4 in the frame.

The Bobcats locked in on defense in the second half, giving up just a pair of goals in the third quarter and shutting out the Mariners for the final 20 minutes of the game.

Sophomore TJ Underhill (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) scored the record-breaking goal on an assist from Markert with 2:06 left in regulation.

Sam Nichol paced the Mariners with a game-high six goals.

Junior Drew Nyhus (Lake Oswego, Ore.) got the start in goal for Bates and picked up his first collegiate win, playing the first 30 minutes of the game and making two saves along the way.

The Bobcats are back in action Saturday when they host No. 6 nationally ranked Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
