LEWISTON, Maine -- In their first March home game since 2006, Bates College baseball showcased resilient pitching and solid defense but fell just short, dropping a 1-0 decision in 10 innings to visiting Plymouth State in the Bobcats' 2025 debut on Leahey Field.
Both teams locked horns in a pitcher's duel from start to finish, with Bates'
Kenny Carlisle setting the tone on the mound. Carlisle delivered six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out five.
Charlie Cariello (0-2) took the loss despite an impressive four-inning relief outing, surrendering just one run on two hits.
The decisive blow came in the top of the 10th inning when Plymouth State RF Chris Faherty led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by 2B Josh Worthington. CF Sam Salvi stepped up and promptly delivered the game-winning RBI single through the left side.
The Bobcats had their opportunities to strike but were stymied by the Plymouth State staff, which yielded only three hits on the day. Bates' best chance came in the home half of the seventh when a one-out triple by 1B
David Swift put the go-ahead run 90 feet away, but a pair of subsequent ground outs ended the threat.
Bates reached in the 10th when pinch-hitter
Luke Yoon drew a two-out walk, but pinch-runner
Joe Yoxall was stranded at first after a game-ending ground out.
Bobcat pitching was well-supported with steady defense, committing a lone miscue on a wind-swept Leahey Field. Plymouth State's Alex Noel (1-0) earned the win with four scoreless innings in relief. Garrett Mayo picked up his first save by closing the door in the 10th.
Bates (1-6) looks to rebound when they take the diamond again on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. home game vs. Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
