LEWISTON, Maine — Junior guard
Sarah Hughes delivered a moment the Alumni Gym crowd won't soon forget, drilling a half-court heave at the buzzer to force double overtime, but the No. 11 Bates women's basketball team fell just short in a 77–70 battle against No. 6 Bowdoin on Thursday night. It marked Bates' first double-overtime game since an 86–85 win over the University of New England on November 25, 2018.
Hughes finished with 12 points, three assists, and three rebounds, punctuating her night with the deep three that extended the rivalry showdown into a second extra period.
Sophomore
Lily Lambo was outstanding off the bench, pouring in a career-high 13 points on 4–8 shooting from the floor (5-for-5 FT), attacking the Polar Bears' defense all night. Senior
Elsa Daulerio turned in another signature performance, totaling 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four blocks while controlling the interior on both ends. Junior
Mya Hicks contributed eight points, three rebounds, and a block.
Senior guard
Sophie Spolter led Bates with 14 points in 40 minutes while junior
Petra Kuncz made the most of her 18 minutes with six boards, two helpers, and a trio of emphatic blocks.
Defensively, the first half was a grind for both teams; Bates led 28–25 at the break but couldn't fully capitalize on its early advantages due to 10 first-half turnovers. The second half brought more punch, as the rivals traded baskets deep into the fourth quarter. With Bowdoin (5-0) holding for the final shot of regulation, Daulerio delivered the defensive play of the game to that point — swatting away the Polar Bears' attempt and sending the contest into overtime.
Bates finished 25–63 from the field (40%) and 16–20 at the line (80%). Bowdoin went 26–66 (40%) and 20–28 (71%) at the stripe.
Bowdoin's sophomore guard, Grace Kinum, put together a sensational double-double performance consisting of 26 points and 10 boards in 43 minutes. Senior guard Carly Davey buried 19 points and shared five assists in the victory.
The Bobcats (6-1) will now sit idle until Thursday, Dec. 18 (6:00 p.m.) when the garnet and white takes on Central College (Iowa) on day one of the Cruzin' Classic in Miami Gardens, Fla.
