Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Aaron Morse

Daulerio reaches 1,000 career points, No. 10 women's basketball wins OT thriller over USM

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior captain Elsa Daulerio became the 22nd player in Bates women's basketball history to score 1,000 career points and the No. 10 nationally ranked Bobcats defeated the University of Southern Maine by a score of 70-66 in an overtime thriller Tuesday evening at Alumni Gym.

Daulerio (Harpswell, Maine) had 14 points at the end of regulation on Tuesday, giving her 999 for her career. With the game tied at 66 and 29 seconds remaining in overtime, senior Sophie Spolter (Blacklick, Ohio) drove to the hoop and missed a tough shot in traffic. Daulerio was there for the rebound and her follow attempt was good, giving her 1,001 career points. She and her mother Adrienne Shibles '91 are now both members of the 1,000-point club at Bates, and are likely only the second mother-daughter combination in college basketball history to reach this milestone for the same school.

Daulerio's bucket gave Bates (4-0) the lead for good in the contest. Sophomore Lily Lambo (Watertown, Mass.) recorded a steal on the other end and Spolter drained a pair of free throws to ice the game for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats led the Huskies (3-1) by as many as 11 points in the opening quarter of action. Senior captain Ava James (Bethesda, Md.) got off to a hot start, draining her third three-pointer of the first quarter with 4:40 left, putting Bates ahead 16-5.

USM chipped away at the deficit and a Jaycie Christopher three-pointer with 28 seconds left trimmed the Bates lead to five at 23-18 to conclude the first quarter.

The Huskies started the second quarter on a 5-0 run, tying the game at 23 on a Christopher free throw. The Bobcats struggled offensively in the stanza, shooting just 2-12 from the floor. Meanwhile, the Huskies only shot 3-13 from the field but they made an incredible 11-12 free throws to take a 35-30 lead into intermission. USM ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, with all six points coming from the foul line.

Christopher scored 14 points in the first half. Then the Bobcats put sophomore Abby Walsh (Evanston, Ill.) on her defensively in the second half, and Christopher tallied just four points over the final 20 minutes.

The Huskies didn't go away, taking their biggest lead of the game at 44-37 on a Dakota Shipley three-pointer with 4:06 left in the third quarter. A Lucy Wiles layup made the score 48-42 in favor of the visitors entering the final quarter of regulation.

Spolter and junior Sarah Hughes (Rumson, N.J.) got the offense going in the fourth quarter, as they both hit early threes to trim the deficit to 49-48 with 7:45 left. Then Daulerio found Lambo on a perfect cut to the hoop for the go-ahead score. Daulerio scored six points on 3-4 shooting in the fourth quarter, and the Bobcats led by three at 60-57 with less than four seconds remaining. But a Shipley three from the top of the key at the buzzer forced overtime.

The Huskies scored the first four points of overtime before Hughes and Spolter hit back-to-back jumpers, tying the game at 64. Wiles responded with a layup to give the Huskies what turned out to be their final lead of the game with 2:29 left in the extra session. Hughes tied the game with a reverse layup on an assist from Spolter with 1:12 left. Then Christopher missed on the other end, setting up Daulerio for her 1000th and 1001st career points.

Spolter paced the Bobcats with 18 points on 6-16 shooting. She made 5-6 from the line, grabbed nine rebounds, and dished out four assists. Daulerio finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four blocked shots. Hughes turned in an impressive performance with 16 points on 6-8 shooting, eight rebounds, and three steals. James added nine points and seven rebounds.

Wiles led all scorers with 22 points for the Huskies on 8-20 shooting. Christopher finished with 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Shipley added 17 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. The rest of the USM team combined for nine points, led by five from Avah Ingalls.

The Huskies made 19-21 attempts from the line, making up for a 34.4 percent shooting night from the field. The Bobcats shot just under 40 percent from the field and tallied 14 second chance points, to just seven for the visitors.

Bates is back in action Sunday when the Bobcats host the University of New England at 3 p.m.
