James' Career-High Leads No. 12 Bobcats to Season-Opening Victory Over WPI

LEWISTON, Maine — The 12th-ranked Bates women's basketball team opened its season with a 63–53 victory over WPI on Saturday afternoon, backed by a standout performance from senior captain Ava James.

James set the tone early, scoring seven of Bates' first eleven points and finishing with a career-high 21 points, five rebounds, and two blocks. Sophomore guard Lily Brown added eight points, showing her scoring versatility with baskets at all three levels.

Two first-years made immediate contributions in their collegiate debuts. First-year Claire Gaetani tallied seven points and an assist in her collegiate debut, while sophomore Lily Lambo added seven points and three assists.

The first half featured gritty play on both sides, with Bates capitalizing on WPI turnovers to build a 33–25 lead at the break. Senior guard Sophie Spolter provided steady two-way play with five points, two rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Senior captain Elsa Daulerio added five points, five rebounds, four assists, and a swipe in her first contest of the year.

Bates maintained control throughout the third quarter, but it was an 11–1 run to open the fourth that ultimately created the separation needed to secure the win.

Depth played a major role, as the Bobcats' bench outscored WPI 26–15.

Bates shot 38.5 percent from the field (25–65) and finished 6-of-19 from three. WPI shot 28.1 percent (16–57) on the afternoon.

The Bobcats return to action this Tuesday, traveling to Bangor to face Husson at 5:30 p.m.
