LEWISTON, Maine -- A second-half goal proved the difference as the Bates men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Connecticut College on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Russell Street Track & Field.
The Bobcats (7-4-2, 3-4-1 NESCAC) honored their senior class —
David Ortiz,
Mauro Kalaora,
Tomas Alberola,
Sebastian Iacovitti,
Cesar Hoover,
Wilson Smith,
Lane Fousheé, and
Isaac Nimako — prior to kickoff. With two conference matches remaining, Bates remains firmly in the postseason mix, currently sitting seventh in the NESCAC standings.
After a scoreless first half, the Camels (7-2-4, 3-2-3 NESCAC) found the back of the net in the 47th minute (46:33) when Gavin Vanden Berg (Sr.-Lake Forest Park, Wash.) headed home a cross from Matt Quiros-Newton (Sr.-Alajuela, Costa Rica) for the game's lone goal.
Bates pushed forward in search of an equalizer, sending off seven shots in the second half, but the Camels' defense held firm. Alberola and
Zach Perron each put shots on target for the Bobcats, while goalkeeper
George Nassar recorded two saves for the home team in the effort.
Bates is back in action next Saturday with a key road contest at Middlebury College. Kickoff is slated for noon.
